Hi Hilma!Welcome to the strange world of internet time travel, where people you knew decades earlier are suddenly everywhere. Only a few days ago I was working on a blog post that called for a link to your name, and here you are -- just in time! :-)http://www.ditchwalk.com/2010/07/26/my-fiction-workshop-fortunes/I hope your writing is going well, and I'm glad you're establishing your own presence online. I think you'll find it interesting at the very least.Take care,Mark Barrett

I just finished An Available Man and enjoyed it very much. The characters were very real to me. This was the first book of yours that I read but it won't be the last.

I just finished An Available Man -- it sensitively deals with so many matters of the heart and mind of those of us entering the afternoon of our lives. Beautifully written and a definite must for my book club. Thanks for the discussion questions on your blog. Do you ever speak or attend conferences in California?

Dear Nancy Herman,I'm so glad that you liked my book and think it's suitable for your book group (my favorite venue for visiting!). I have no plans to come to California now, but would love to soon. Thanks for your sensitve, thoughtful reading and for writing to me. All best, Hilma

I picked up An Available Man from my branch library, thought I'd take a flyer w/ it. I customarily read 2-3 books at a time, and shortly after starting An Available Man it became my main book, I found it engaging and lively. I liked how the story was told, the back and forth of the present and the past, I enjoyed the main characters, and I found the writing superbly done. I thought I knew where the story was going and it bummed me out, but I was pleasantly surprised how it turned out. This young dude (I am 57) liked the book a lot, and I want to tell you Hilma, great job.

Any idea when An Available Man will be published in paperback? I want to recommend it for my book group but we do not read new / hardback books.

Just stayed up till 2 am finishing An Available Man, and loving every sentence, every turn of phrase. I am so sad that the book is over, finished for me. It was one of those books that you never want to end, so you relish just a few bites at a time (until you can't help yourself and you just gobble up what's left!). I am going to miss Edward and his world. Thank you so much for inviting me in and sharing your oh-so-beilevable characters with us readers (much better than reality TV certainly). Proud to say that I still read actual books (not hi-tech-gizmo versions of same) and I happily purchased AAMan from my favorite haunt, Barnes & Noble, initially attracted to it by the lovely cover (so kudos to your jacket designer). Thanks again. I am looking forward to devouring the rest of your works shortly...so happy to have discovered you! (I, too, am a native Brookynite--Madison HS--and I also attended grad school--in English Lit, not Writer's Workshop--at U Iowa.)

As chair, I have recommended your wonderful collection of short stories "A Woman Went Mad..." for our upcoming book review. I find some people have difficulty appreciating the medium and wonder your thoughts on the challenge or engaging readers and writing about these small moments over that of a novel. Thank you!
